She looked over at Evie, who had her hand pressed hard against her mouth trying to control her giggles.
Then the hilarity of the situation hit Bailey too, and a bubble of laughter erupted out of her. Then she was bent forward, holding her stomach, as the giggles overtook her and the two of them were whisper-laughing hysterically like a couple of loons.
Their laughter died on their lips as the sound of a heavy thud and footsteps walked across the floor above them.
Chapter Nineteen
Bailey grabbed for Evieâs hand, squeezing it as all the moisture dried up in her mouth. Their eyes had adjusted to the dark by now and they looked at each other, both their eyes wide.
Evie pointed to the window. âShould we go back out?â she mouthed.
Bailey looked from the window to her friend then back to the window. She had no idea what to do. Sheâd never been in a situation even remotely similar to this.
But her characters had. And she would never have her heroine or hero run away from a situation. They were always barreling headfirst into whatever trouble she threw at them. But that was the differenceâshe could control what happened to them.
The footsteps sounded again, followed by another door shutting. The door to the bathroom was shut, but a sliver of moonlight shone along the crack at the bottom. Evie slid silently across the floor, putting her ear close to the crack, her body tense as she listened.
Bailey carefully crawled over to her and bent her head to listen too. They both jumped at the sound of another door shutting, then the steady rhythmic thumps of footfalls running down the stairs. She knew enough of the layout from the day of Wernerâs death to know that a set of stairs came out at the rear of the kitchen near the back door. So they had to be in the small powder room next to the pantry.
Depending on which way the intruder ⦠the other intruder ⦠besides the two of them ⦠decided to go, they would either exit the house out the back or pass right by this door.
She held her breath as the footfalls hit the bottom steps then changed to a soft squeak as they crossed the kitchen tile. Evie was squeezing her hand, and she squeezed back as they both held otherwise perfectly still, every nerve of their bodies concentrating on the sound of those steps.
A loud creak made them both jump. Bailey wasnât sure if it was her hand that was shaking or Evieâs, as they heard the back door creak open, then seconds later creak shut again and close with a solid thud.
Both women let out their breath as they released each otherâs hands. Bailey sagged against the bathroom door, but Evie scrambled across the floor and slowly raised her head to see out the window, as if she might catch a glimpse of the other intruder.
âSee anything?â Bailey whispered, crawling over to peer out on the windowâs other side.
